Omnia.11 Lures Listeners to Toronto's CHUM-FM and Virgin 99.9

Wally LennoxThe mind fairly boggles at the thought of the myriad complex strategies that are melded into achieving “the right sound” at top stations in Toronto, Canada's biggest and most competitive radio market. And we’re not just talking programming here, but imaging, production, focus group testing… the list goes on and on.

A vital part of this fine-tuning process includes audio processing for final broadcast, of course. And at our feature broadcaster, such tuning requires an Omnia.11 FM audio processor, a set of highly trained ears, and a lot of patience. But the payoff is worth every second, helping to draw listeners by the bucketful to Bell Media’s Virgin 99.9 CKFM and CHUM-FM.

Of course, getting Director of Engineering Wally Lennox to believe in Omnia has never been much of a challenge. Here, Wally tells us what makes him so fond of Omnia, and his painstaking process for finding the right sound.

A quote like that makes one sit up and take notice, especially when it comes from an in-the-trenches engineer like Dan Houg of Northern Community Radio in Bemidji, Minnesota. Check out his very informative article in Radio magazine that details a ground-up studio build with Axia consoles.

“Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers." So goes the old Apple ad. And if ever a rebel there was, it's Michael Zwerling, one of a dying breed: an independent radio owner. Here, Michael leads a tour of KSCO 1080 AM in Santa Cruz, CA.
