This is the 30th consecutive NAB for Telos products. It shouldn't come as a surprise that the first show we attended, in 1985, was much smaller and the technology was far less advanced.
At the time, programmers were looking to talk programs and call-in segments as means to increase ratings. But on-air phone conversations were plagued by inconsistent audio levels, degradation of announce mic quality and extreme difficulty achieving full, simultaneous conversation. The available telephone hybrids were insufficient to address these issues, frustrating both stations and listeners.
Art Reed, of Bradley Broadcast, shares his story of the 1985 NAB. The centerpiece of the Bradley booth was Steve Church's Telos 10 digital telephone hybrid, and it was the only broadcast audio product at the exhibition using digital signal processing.
What happened that show will surprise you.
