As we recognize Patriot Day here in the U.S., we remember those who lost their lives that tragic day in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. It is with no small measure of gratitude that we recognize the fallen, and all those who rushed to help - not only at the scene of the attack, but in any way possible. Among them, a network of 250 Amateur Radio operators based in the Big Apple.
New York's Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Service served as a backup to the city's communication systems for two weeks following the World Trade Center attacks. Local Amateur Radio operators didn't have to be asked - they simply sprung into action. Preparing for disasters is part of being a ham radio operator, so it came naturally for the organization. As ARECS President Charles Hargrove (N2NOV) says, "When it finally happens, you just go into automatic. You don't even think about it."
For hams everywhere who respond in times of need - Thank You.
