Streaming audio may be moving into a golden age of sorts, but it's taken a while to get to this point. Much like listening to a live stream in the early days (buffering... buffering...), streaming audio has had its share of fits and starts. So while the concept of simulcasting a radio broadcast online has been around for over two decades, the tech has only recently caught up with the demand.

Shane Toven takes a look at the history of streaming audio, and brings us up to speed with the latest in streaming tech.
